Developing Treatment for Cocaine Addiction

Embera NeuroTherapeutics, Inc. has Louisiana State University’s license to develop the drug studied by Nicholas Goeders at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – Shreveport. Goeders is head of the Louisiana State University medical school’s pharmacology department and the chief scientific officer at Embera NeuroTherapeutics.

The drug intended to treat cocaine addiction combines the tranquilizer oxazepam and metyrapone, which will reduce the body’s ability to produce the stress hormone cortisol. Goeders said that preliminary tests indicate the drug may help hold promise to help people stop smoking.
