As the prescription drug abuse epidemic in this country continues, news breaks that Americans consume 80 percent of the world’s supply of pain pills. That is more than 110 tons of pure, addictive opiates every year. That is enough drugs to give every American 64 Percocet or Vicodin pills. Prescriptions for pain pills continue to increase, up 600 percent in ten years. Deaths from prescription pain pill overdoses total 14,800 a year. That is more than deaths attributed to heroin and cocaine combined.
Across the United States, police are reporting increases in robberies and other crimes by people addicted to oxycodone and hydrocodone, the key ingredients in most prescription pain pills.
There have been strides made in the fight against prescription drug abuse, but experts continue to emphasize that education and awareness need to be a priority.
