Vivitrol: Approval from FDA to Market Drug

A drug company reports that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market the drug Vivitrol. The drug is an addiction medication designed for use in patients addicted to drugs like morphine or heroin.

The drug is administered to patients as a monthly injection to treat opiate addiction. The drug has previously been approved for use to treat alcoholism. Vivitrol is designed to block the dopamine receptors in the brain that give the user the pleasurable feelings that are associated with drug and alcohol abuse.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Vivitrol based on the results of studies that indicated the study subjects were more likely to be free of opioids than those who received a placebo injection. In the urine samples of those study subjects taking Vivitrol, 90 percent of them were free of opioids, as opposed to 35 percent who were receiving the placebo injection.
