There are certain Bible stories that are very familiar to most people. We all have heard of Noah’s Ark, but the story of the Tower of Babel somehow slips by everyone’s attention. Yet, the Babel story is very relevant to our lives today, especially if you are a person struggling with addiction.
Let me summarize. In Genesis, we begin with the story of creation. Immediately, we learn of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden. Then we are astonished by the flood in Noah’s day. Once Noah and his family came out of the Ark, they began to repopulate the earth. The Bible states that as mankind had a resurgence, they began to congregate in one area, the Mesopotamian Valley called the “Land of Shinar.”
There, they began to build a city and a tall tower to reach to the sky. This tower was probably religious in nature and meant to worship idols instead of the one true and living God. What was the problem here? Well, God told mankind to “be fruitful and multiply and spread over the earth.” Mankind deliberately ignored God and stayed in one place. They were living life without God, no consideration of Him, no consulting Him. They were self-sufficient and independent.
And that is our problem, isn’t it? We are more comfortable hiding our problems inside of us, trying to fix ourselves. We are naturally bent toward not depending on God, but depending on ourselves. This self-sufficiency is what is killing us. We are better when we depend on God and trust Him with our lives. Isn’t that exactly what Steps 2 and 3 in the 12 steps are all about? Realizing we cannot fix ourselves, we turn our lives and wills over to the care of God. We all have a bit of Babel in us….
