British Government: Almost $6 Billion Dollars Treating Addiction

A new report finds that it costs the British government almost $6 billion dollars a year to treat people addicted to drugs. The report, from the think tank Centre for Policy Studies, has criticized the British government’s plans to change the way authorities deal with drug addiction. The British Justice Secretary, Kenneth Clarke, wants to redirect people into drug treatment rather than prison as part of a “rehabilitation revolution.” The Centre for Policy Studies report criticizes plans to reward drug addicts who have improved their prospects for jobs but who are not in a drug treatment program. “Solving the drug problem means recognizing the problem for what it is: one of addiction.”
