Camp Mariposa Florida is free for children who are facing challenges connected with an addicted member of their family. The first Camp Mariposa Florida weekend was held in early December. Together with traditional camp activities, the weekend included self-care strategies, emotional support and education about the effects of drugs and addiction.
“This program will allow us to serve children who are battling addiction in their family and will hopefully give them the tools to break the cycle,” said Betsy Schwartz, director of Major Programs of Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Sarasota-Manatee.
An estimated 8.3 million children in the United States live in homes with a parent addicted to drugs or alcohol. Camp Mariposa is offered several times a year. It is led by mental health and addiction professionals.
