Fighting Substance Abuse On Staten Island

Tackling Youth Substance Abuse

The Tackling Youth Substance Abuse initiative strives to steer the youth of Staten Island away from alcohol and prescription drug abuse. Adrienne Abbate is the new director of the group, and she hopes the coordination of the various individual anti-drug efforts on Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City, will reduce the problem with substance abuse among teenagers and young adults. Abbate hopes to increase education and awareness and ensuring everyone has all they need to fight the problem.

“We want Staten Island youth to make responsible and healthy choices, and decrease the use of alcohol and prescription drugs,” said Abbate.

Staten Island has the highest rates of youth substance abuse in New York City. In 2010, 31 Staten Island residents died from prescription pain pill overdoses. On the most recent Prescription Take Back Day, residents turned in more than 400 tons of prescription drugs for disposal.
