SAMHSA Study: Driving Under the Influence

A new survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds that on average, 13.2 percent of all people over the age of 16 have driven under the influence of alcohol in the past year. The SAMHSA study also indicated that 4.3 percent of the same demographic have driven under the influence of illicit drugs in the past year.

The states with the highest levels of alcohol impaired driving were Wisconsin and North Dakota. The states with the highest levels of drug impaired driving are Rhode Island and Vermont. The states with the lowest rates of alcohol impaired driving were Utah and Mississippi. The states with the lowest levels of drug impaired driving were Iowa and New Jersey.

“Thousands of people die each year as a result of drunk and drugged driving, and the lives of thousands of family members and friends left behind are forever scarred,” said Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration head Pamela S. Hyde.
