Months after his anti-Semitic drunken outburst at a Paris cafe made headlines around the world, British designer John Galliano will stand trial for his crimes. The former head of the Christian Dior fashion house has spent almost four months in an American drug and alcohol rehab. It is expected that Galliano will blame his deplorable actions on his addictions to drugs and alcohol. Galliano was arrested on February 24 at a cafe in the historically Jewish Marais district. The designer approached a couple and started screaming anti-Semitic slurs. A drunken Galliano was heard to say “I love Hitler” when footage of another similar incident was made public. He was later fired from his position at Christian Dior. Galliano claims he does not remember his actions, and says that he does not hold these anti-Semitic beliefs. If Galliano is convicted, he could face up to six months in prison and a substantial fine. Galliano’s lawyer says that he will return to complete his treatment for drug and alcohol addiction after the trial is over.
