Kentucky Senate Race: Drug Abuse Becomes Political Platform

The Kentucky Senate race has ignited a heated discussion about drug addiction. Jack Conway, the Democratic candidate, recently visited Kentucky’s mountain region where he contradicted his Republican opponent, Rand Paul, who said that drug abuse isn’t “a real pressing issue” for Kentucky.

Paul visited a faith-based addiction recovery center in western Kentucky and accused Conway of “pandering” for votes.

“It’s been recently insinuated somehow that I don’t care about the drug problem in Kentucky, and that’s absolutely wrong” Paul said before touring the Wingshadow Lodge of Western Kentucky Teen Challenge, a Christian drug treatment center for men. The center does not rely on any taxpayer money.

Conway participated in a roundtable discussion with local prosecutors and residents who are frustrated by the results of a drug epidemic in their community. Prescription drug addiction has become a significant problem in the state.
