Dan and Ame’s Story
Dan Phillips and Ame Boehmer, an Indiana couple that got married just last weekend, found a light at the end of the dark tunnel of drug addiction. When they met three years ago, they were both struggling with an addiction to methamphetamine.
Methamphetamine took over Boehmer’s life. She got pregnant, lost her job, her home, and her hopes of becoming a nurse. Things got even worse when police arrested her one night. After that, Boehmer received probation but lost custody of her daughter.
“I tried to stay clean, but I told my probation officer I was struggling,” Boehmer said. “I thought I’d go to rehab, but instead I went to prison.”
During her time in prison, Boehmer learned that she was pregnant again and gave birth to another daughter.
Boehmer was 30 years old when she was finally released. Within a short time, she found some part-time work but quickly began using drugs again.
Meanwhile, Phillips has battled depression for years. He began using methamphetamine from time to time, but that quickly changed to daily use. Eventually, Phillips and Boehmer met and connected. Later, when the two discovered that they were expecting Boehmer’s third child together, Phillips knew he needed to make a change in his life.
He was arrested in April and charged with the unlawful purchase of the ingredients to make methamphetamine. He spent three weeks in the county jail.
“It was like my detox,” Phillips said.
The Turning Point
Phillips left the jail and went to Shelter Ministries, a nonprofit Christian organization that provides a transitional recovery facility for men and women struggling with addiction.
“When I first came here, I was in awe because people wanted to help. I was a mess, and people didn’t know how to deal with it. I came here, and people opened their doors.”
Boehmer quickly joined Phillips in the program. They both credit Christ and His love with their ability to overcome their addiction to methamphetamine.
“Just stopping drugs or addictive behavior is not the answer,” Boehmer said. “It’s a spiritual void. People need God. You don’t have to live in bondage without Christ or joy. Knowing Christ is the only real cure.”
