There is a small but growing number of physicians in the United States that are facing criminal charges over prescription drugs. This coincides with the explosion of prescription drug addiction throughout the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatal overdoses from prescription painkillers more than tripled to 13,800 in the period from 1999 to 2006. As states like Florida and Georgia continue to struggle with the consequences from prescription drug addiction, more physicians are finding themselves in the crosshairs of law enforcement and being prosecuted for misconduct. In the period from 2001 to 2011, there were 37 reported criminal cases, with the most recent cases against physicians for over-prescribing prescription pain pills and other controlled substances.
