Medical School Insurance Not Covering Substance Abuse

New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that most medical schools in the United States do not offer their students health insurance plans that sufficiently cover mental health or substance abuse treatment. “Visit and dollar limits are common features of medical student insurance coverage for [mental health treatment] and [substance abuse treatment],” said lead author Dr. Rachel Nardin, assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. This news has the researchers worried because this discourages medical students from seeking help and treatment for their problems with mental health and substance abuse.  “This parity is not reassuring given the importance to the medical profession and patients of aggressively treating these disorders. Everyone, including medical students, deserves full access to all needed care.”
