Patty Duke is happy to share her story of her bipolar disorder and alcohol addiction. The 64-year-old Oscar-winning actress recently spoke at an event in Houston that was hosted by the Recovery Resource Council. The organization promotes drug and alcohol rehab services. Duke now lives in Idaho and has been speaking publicly about her struggles with mental illness and substance abuse for more than 25 years.
“When we finally recognize that something is wrong, we usually try to medicate with either drugs or alcohol. In my case it was alcohol and, of course, it only exacerbates the situation,” Duke said.
Duke has coped for years with her bipolar disorder and has remained sober since entering treatment more than 35 years ago. The actress who once played Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker” hopes to give encouragement to other people struggling with mental addiction and drug and alcohol addiction.
“My goal is to leave a positive message and empower people to go get the help they need.”
