A physician in Detroit faces 12 years in prison for the deaths of three people suffering from an addiction to painkillers. Dr. Paul Emerson will be sentenced on Thursday in federal court. Federal prosecutors called the “human toll and tragedy…unfathomable.” Almost two years ago, Emerson pleaded guilty to conspiracy and distribution of controlling substances resulting in deaths. Emerson admitted to the 2004 death of his patient Steven Sloane.
Prosecutors are also blaming Emerson for the 2005 deaths of his patients Michael Bally and Margaret Burden.
