Politics and Addiction Recovery are starting to mix. At this years’ Democratic and Republican National Conventions, which will be held in Charlotte, NC and Tampa, FL, there will be Recovery/Wellness rooms for any recovering persons attending to relax, fellowship with other addicts and alcoholics, and enjoy a safe setting away from the various cocktail parties that traditionally are held at political conventions. Delegates, staff and guests can all utilize these “safe zones.”
The Recovery/Wellness rooms will provide 12 step meetings and support. These rooms have been organized by Faces and Voices of Recovery and the Coalition for Whole Health. Tom Coderre, Democratic delegate believes, “One’s personal recovery can be challenging to maintain at a convention.”
Ron Manderscheid, Executive Director of the National Association of County Behavioral Health and Development Disability Directors agrees that conventions can be difficult places for recovering addicts to maintain serenity. He also believes firmly in supporting recovery and offering a safe place for recovering addicts and alcoholics to feel comfortable at such a high energy, festive atmosphere. Manderscheid is the co-chair of the Coalition. He states, “This work sends a very strong signal to our national leaders that treatment works and that recovery from these conditions is a reality.”
The Recovery/Wellness rooms are poised to offer support to convention attendees who wish to use them. Additionally, more programs, events, and supportive groups are being organized to provide additional support for the political recovery community.
