Prescription Drug Epidemic Legislation
New York Senator Chuck Schumer hopes his legislation to stem the prescription drug epidemic will likely win approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. This will clear a major hurdle on its way to becoming law. The prescription drug abuse problem in New York is considerable. There were a total of 12,800 drug overdose cases recorded in New York last year.
“For every reported case, there’s probably 10 that go unreported,” Schumer said. “The devastation (prescription drug abuse) leaves in its wake affects all parts of the state.”
The legislation, the SAFE DOSES Act, would increase penalties for pharmacy robberies of drugs and any illegal diversion from the supply chain.
As in every other state in the country, prescription drug abuse has presented a considerable challenge for local and state law enforcement officials.
