Prescription drugs are a problem that has, unfortunately, affected every aspect of the American population. It has destroyed lives and families. This is troubling to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
“Prescription drug abuse is epidemic in our country,” said Barbara Carreno, a spokeswoman for the DEA. “Increasingly, prescription drugs are the gateway drugs for young people. The majority of young people tell surveyors that they get the drugs from friends and family.”
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, seven million people each year abuse prescription drugs. This is compared to an estimated 400,000 people each year who abuse heroin. The Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled the second National Prescription Drug Take Back Day for April 30. Details are still in the planning stages, but the agency will list all information on their website – www.justice.gov/dea.
