Researchers at the University of Kansas have been working diligently to develop new compounds that hold the promise to help in the treatment of drug addiction. It is hoped that the research will someday soon offer new therapies that will treat addiction to drugs. The research has resulted in the research team being awarded a five-year, $1.5 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health. The research team has, to date, improved five classes of molecules, or chemical compounds, that show promise for future treatment of drug addiction. The research team acknowledge that addiction is a disease that affects millions of people in the United States.
