A report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds that Maine has the highest percentage of its residents receiving treatment for prescription drug addiction. According to the SAMHSA study, since 1998, Mainers have consistently looked for treatment for opiate addiction at significantly higher rates than in other states or the entire United States.
In 1998, there were 28 Mainers for every 100,000 residents in treatment. In 2008, that number increased to 386 admissions to treatment for every 100,000 residents.
This statistic is not a surprise to many, who have experienced the epidemic of prescription drug addiction across the state, region and the country.
