Medicare and Medicaid: Solution to Prescription Drug Problem?
A congressional subcommittee hearing heard about possible solutions in the Medicare and Medicaid programs to stop the prescription drug abuse epidemic in this country.
Senator Jay Rockefeller is the chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care. During a hearing this week, Rockefeller said that physicians need prescription drug monitoring programs that work across state lines. Rockefeller added that patients need to be better informed about how to use prescription drugs without abusing them.
Rockefeller noted that in his home state of West Virginia, between the years of 2001 and 2008, the death rate from prescription drug overdoses quadrupled.
