Unresolved pain is often a major contributing factor to the cycle of addiction. Often times we carry these past burdens with us and use substances to cover the unbearable pain. Christians believe that if we accept the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ, we have been forgiven. Acts 13:38-39 “Brothers, listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is declared right with God—something the law of Moses could never do.”
Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” So often, however, our hands are full. We carry around our burdens, and are unable to receive the grace, forgiveness and the rest he is offering us. At times we are unable to forgive ourselves, for the pain and destruction we have caused. We don’t feel like we deserve to be forgiven. However, until we lay down this pain, and empty our hands, we simply can’t receive the grace, forgiveness and rest offered. So we continue a vicious cycle of trying to hide the pain any way we can.
Burdens aren’t ours to carry any longer. Christ has taken them from us if we will just lay them down.
