Paul Radkowski, CEO of Life Recovery Program in Ontario, believes web based addiction programs are proving to be a powerful addition to traditional in-patient addiction treatment programs. They are not meant to replace traditional in-patient or out-patient treatment programs, however.
Different addiction programs on the web range from education interventions, to web based therapy programs, many of which are self guided. There are also human supported web based therapy programs, according to Radkowski. He explained how these internet based addiction treatment programs work at the recent meeting of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC).
Radkowski said, “Addiction is a 24/7 issue, and requires 24/7 solutions. Internet programs can help address that need. They are not meant to replace face-to-face modalities, which provide support and accountability, but can supplement them,”
Although online programs for addiction treatment are in the early stages of development, Radkowski states that research shows this type of treatment is promising. They can be especially helpful for people who are waiting to get into in-patient treatment programs, Radkowski believes.
