Last week, we co-hosted the Restoring Hope: Winning The Battle Over Addiction educational conference at Palm Beach Atlantic University. The half-day conference covered addiction as a disease from a Christ-centered perspective. Our featured speakers, Pastor John Poitevent, Allison Good and Dr. Rick Amato shared effective methods of intervention and support.
Our first speaker, Allison Good shared her personal story of addiction and recovery. Allison discussed interventions and tips on how to help to an addict without getting in the way of their healing.
Pastor John Poitevent discussed what scripture says about addiction, and asked “how would Jesus relate to someone in addiction?” Pastor John also shared his personal expericence in guiding his congregation members towards recovery.
Dr. Rick Amato declared war on addiction. “The war on drugs has failed, it’s time to focus on the demand not the supplier.” Dr. Amato shared insights on the global impact of addiction and how it affects individuals and families.
Conference guests gained a deeper understanding of the complicated issues we face when confronted with a family or congregation member suffering from addiction. Thank you to our speakers and to everyone who attended. We would also like to give a special thank you to our co-hosts The South Florida Association of Christian Counselors for their contribution to this event.
