The Bible and the 12 Steps
The 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous encompass the Bible’s core teachings regarding God’s loving relationship with humankind. In establishing the foundation of the 12-step fellowship, Bill Wilson borrowed from numerous sources, including the Bible. Although there are no direct references to the Bible in the literature of Alcoholics Anonymous, the core principles of the 12-step fellowship trace their roots to the Scripture. In the Christian 12 Steps, people are encouraged to turn their will and their lives over to a Higher Power, referenced to as God in four of the 12 steps. Two of the central concepts of Alcoholics Anonymous are reliance on God and service to others. Both of these principles are at the core of the Bible’s teachings.
