Panic Attack

What Is A Panic Attack?

Panic attacks are episodes during which a person is overcome by feelings of intense fear, as well as a pounding heart, sweatiness, dizziness, weakness or faintness. The National Institute of Mental Health says that panic attacks can occur anytime, even while sleeping. When a person experiences repeated panic attacks, the diagnosis is a panic disorder.

Panic disorder is a very treatable mental illness, but if left untreated can result in agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces. This happens when a person starts to avoid places and events where they experienced a panic attack.

What Are The Symptoms of A Panic Attack?

During a panic attack, a person may appear flushed and feel chilled. They may think they are having a heart attack, losing their mind, or are on the verge of death. Other physical symptoms of a panic attack can include:

  • Tingling or numbness in hands
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain
  • Smothering sensations
  • Unrealistic feelings
  • Impending sense of doom
  • Fear of losing control
