Partial Hospitalization Program
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." - Isaiah 40:31
Admitting the need for treatment for addiction is a big step forward, especially as a Christian. Reconciling and accepting sins is only the first stage, however; actually seeking treatment to address underlying causes of addiction, seek forgiveness from God, and commit to sobriety is most important.
However, rehabilitation isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Different patients have different needs, from opposing worship habits to varying levels of necessary support. While inpatient rehabilitation is often a highly beneficial first step, providing a safe and supportive environment through which to detox, seek counseling, rebuild a relationship with Christ, and develop healthy lifestyle and coping habits, there's no one way forward. After completion of a residential course of treatment, most patients are prepared to transition into an outpatient program, but this isn't right for everyone. For those who require additional structure, guidance, and oversight, a partial hospitalization program, or PHP, is an ideal progression.
As a full-service Christian approach to rehabilitation, Road to Freedom is here to guide you along the path to recovery. Offering a thorough PHP within our center, Road to Freedom can provide the holistic focus on mental, physical, and spiritual health you deserve. What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program serves as a bridge between inpatient and outpatient therapy. Instead of living full time in a facility, patients are able to leave in the evenings and on weekends. In essence, this provides the best of both worlds: comprehensive professional treatment and the comforts of home.
PHP extends the advantages of inpatient rehabilitation, providing full days of activity that contribute to greater accountability. By spending approximately 30 hours a week in our center, patients are able to continue to fully commit to recovery in order to prevent a slide back into old habits. This process can help prevent against relapse and re-admission into an inpatient facility in the future, ensuring patients stay the course rather than taking steps backward.
The Need for PHP Treatment
Inpatient rehabilitation is an extremely effective solution, providing a home away from home for thousands of patients in need of a fresh start. However, residential treatment can't last forever. At a certain point, all patients must exit treatment and rejoin society, returning to their former lives.
The coping techniques taught in therapy can make a difference in standing strong against cravings and triggers, but some people aren't quite ready for this step. This can also be true for those with co-occurring disorders and other health-related conditions that exacerbate the pain of addiction. When the risks involved with re-assimilating into old lifestyles are too significant, a partial hospitalization program can mitigate these threats to sobriety.
When Is PHP an Option?
PHP is a good option for those who do not feel ready to move to a traditional outpatient program but still crave the freedom that comes with life after inpatient rehabilitation. PHP generally doesn't stand alone; it works as an intermediary stage in between a more restrictive 24/7 residential environment and the lesser oversight in an outpatient setting.
Patients who choose a transitional program have many varying motivations. Some would like to ease slowly back into normal life, while others want to rebuild family relationships. Many patients do not trust themselves, especially after the intense psychiatric care involved in rehabilitation, and feel that PHP can allow for more freedom without sacrificing accountability. Others may need to return to work to make money, or simply want to live a more normal life while working through the initial stages of recovery.
While there is no one patient who is best suited for the PHP model, those who are most successful often are seeking:
- Additional freedom to work towards normal life
- A less restrictive environment without sacrificing professional management
- The benefits of family support
- Further development of life skills
How Can PHP Help in Addiction Recovery?
For patients who were able to successfully complete inpatient treatment but who wish to stay focused on a more rigorous course of care, PHP can ensure continued focus on rehabilitation. While outpatient rehabilitation is very valuable, some patients may find themselves enticed by their old lifestyles, especially once interacting with other users and negative influences again.
During this initial period of integration, additional assistance can be very valuable. PHP can help patients overcome fears, resist peer pressure, and continue to cope with triggers, smoothing out speed bumps on the path to lifelong recovery. Independence after struggling with addiction is a long, challenging path and users who feel more comfortable with additional support can truly benefit from a partial hospitalization program.
How PHP Works at Road to Freedom
Road to Freedom's PHP treatment takes place in our facility, similar to our outpatient and inpatient therapies. Many of the programs provided are the same as offered in our other treatment programs, allowing patients to continue on in a familiar environment. The goal of our PHP is to further the development of spirituality, abstinence, and inner strength, helping patients to function with confidence and enhanced self-esteem.
At Road to Freedom, our drug and alcohol PHP consists of six hours of therapy, five days a week. Similar to a residential atmosphere, patients can benefit from numerous variations and approaches to treatment, including care for:
As with all of our programs, treatment goes beyond simple counseling, offering a well-rounded opportunity for all patients. Within PHP, supplementary therapies include:

- Church services
- And more
Due to the encompassing nature of PHP, we are able to continue to customize treatment, offering a combination of care that's right for you and your faith.
Life After PHP Treatment
As with residential treatment, PHP doesn't last forever. As you continue to grow healthier in mind, body, and spirit, it will be time to move forward. Life after PHP generally involves more traditional outpatient therapy, including counseling sessions, 12-step groups, and further work with your faith leaders as your relationship with Christ develops.
Aftercare is provided through our outpatient treatment facility in Lake Worth, Florida, keeping patients focused on the principles of recovery on a long-term basis. With access to trained therapists, spiritual leaders, church services, Bible study, and more, much of the same essential care is available after the conclusion of inpatient and PHP treatments. We encourage our patients to continue their journey with us as we ease the transition into work, school, and family life in order to see the best possible results.
